By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William O. Quirk (ASN: 71212), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Quirk distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in Bois Quincy, Chemin des Dames Sector, France, 19 February 1918. During a heavy hostile bombardment of his battalion, Private Quirk volunteered and successfully carried a message through two box barrages between Battalion Headquarters and the assaulting company headquarters and brought back the return message.
