By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Lee C. Lewis, United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain (Infantry) Lewis distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Sergy, France, 30 July 1918. When contact with adjoining units had been lost and several attempts to secure contact had failed, Captain Lewis, then battalion adjutant, volunteered to lead a patrol in an endeavor to locate units on the left, in the performance of which mission he received a fatal wound.
