By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class August Johasky (ASN: 56339), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Johasky distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. The battalion commander and another officer having been killed by machine gun fire, Private Johasky pursued the gun crew, who had fled toward their own lines, and brought them back as prisoners. Later he returned through heavy shell fire to the body of his battalion commander and took therefrom important orders which he turned over to the battalion adjutant. Subjected to intense machine gun fire and forced continually to pass through heavily shelled areas, he proceeded with utmost coolness and dispatch to procure and bring back information regarding the disposition of our own troops and those of the enemy.
