Wheeler, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at St. Ansano, Italy, on 31 January 1945. Lieutenant Wheeler led a five-man patrol that wiped out an enemy strongpoint and machinegun post and then stayed with a patrol member who lost a foot in a mine field. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 88th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
