Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 60 (April 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Cavalry) Robert Lane Westbrook (ASN: 0-1015267), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Weppler, Belgium, on 18 December, 1944. When an overwhelming enemy force surrounded and overran his platoon’s position, Second Lieutenant Westbrook, although severely wounded early in the engagement, rallied the five known survivors of his group and led them to safety. Reaching a point from which he was able to direct his men in returning to their troop Command Post, he pointed out the route they were to follow. Then, despite his wounds, he returned to the scene of the battle in an attempt to extricate any of his men who might still be alive. Second Lieutenant Westbrook’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
