The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Elmer Simon Ward (ASN: 0-1883477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 22 January, 1944. When his Infantry Battalion was ordered across a river in Italy to establish a bridgehead, Staff Sergeant Ward, then a platoon sergeant, led his men across a narrow foot bridge constantly subjected to enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire and advanced with them to a point 250 yards beyond the river bank. Temporarily halted by barbed wire entanglements, covered by enemy machine gun fire, he ordered the wire cut and skillfully directed his platoon through the entanglements. The quickly mounting casualties caused by concentrated fire from the strongly defended enemy positions and explosion from well-placed mines made efficient organization difficult; but, realizing the necessity for consolidating the depleted forces into an effective firing and fighting unit, he moved among the men, reorganizing them to renew the attack. Throughout the day, while most of the troops were pinned down by the furious fire, he continued to direct his men in an effort to maintain control of the company at a time when most of the officers and noncommissioned officers had been killed or wounded. He prevented disorganization of the company and led them effectively against the enemy. Ward (ASN: 0-1883477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 21 October 1944, in France. Lieutenant Ward, leader of the 1st Platoon of Company F, was assigned the mission of attacking a strong enemy machine gun position on a wooded hill. He led three attacks against the strong point, advancing ahead of his men in the face of heavy machine gun, machine pistol and rifle fire. On the third attack he weakened the hostile defenses and discovered the weak spot in the enemy line. Swiftly reorganizing his platoon, now depleted by numerous casualties, he led a fourth assault and, inspiring his men by his example of intrepidity, drove forward to seize his objective.

Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 300 (July 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Elmer Simon Ward (ASN: 0-1883477), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Herlisheim, France, on 2 and 3 February 1945. Having led a reconnaissance patrol on the preceding night to determine the enemy strength and disposition around an important bridge, First Lieutenant Ward was assigned the mission of seizing the bridge with his platoon. He led eight men across the bridge, in the face of intense enemy machine gun fire. On the far bank, he fired rifle grenades against the machine gun position, silenced the weapon and killing its crew. Then, attacking an enemy-held building, he led his platoon in killing six of the enemy and capture of 39. When a group of six Germans attempted to blow up the bridge he opened fire with his carbine and captured them all. His intrepid and gallant action were responsible for securing the important bridge. First Lieutenant Ward’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
