Thompson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 755th Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Valentano and Latera, Italy, from 11 to 13 June 1944. First Lieutenant Thompson’s tank was the last of the company of tanks he was leading to be destroyed by the enemy during an attack on a German supply route near Rome, Italy. With the only tank left, his crew and a handful of French Marquis held the important route for 24 hours until relief arrived. He was mortally wounded by enemy shrapnel shortly thereafter. First Lieutenant Thompson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
