The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dale Vaughn Stice (ASN: 0-440555), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 42d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska, on 29 May 1943. Second Lieutenant Stice, acting as Commanding Officer of his seriously depleted company, displayed great heroism in leading a successful assault on Buffalo Ridge. Strong enemy defenses on this precipitous ridge had held up our forces for several days. Advancing rapidly in the face of heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Stice refused to fall back despite a heavy grenade barrage that drove many of his men from the crest of the ridge. Inspired by his courage, the men rallied and held the ridge. Lieutenant Stice was killed as he attempted to return an unexploded grenade. His outstanding leadership contributed immeasurably to the advance of our forces. Second Lieutenant Stice’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
