(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Bertram Nathaniel Sheff, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Staff Officer with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Ostia, Italy, on 9 June 1944. Major Sheff was conducting a motor reconnaissance when, on rounding a curve, he found himself face-to-face with an enemy armored car. The two vehicles halted within three yards of each other and the Germans opened up with machine gun fire. Major Sheff leaped out of his jeep, climbed on top of the armored car, and emptied the clip of his .45-caliber pistol into an open port. Thinking the crew had been killed, he jumped to the ground when he discovered the armored car was moving and the driver was still alive. Reloading, Major Sheff once again climbed to the top of the armored vehicle and emptied his pistol. The car came to a stop, all of its occupants dead. Major Sheff’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 91st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
