Sell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 35th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces during the attack on Guebling, France, on 14 November 1944. During a six-hour battle, German Panther Tanks tried to push past the American forces. The surrounding fields were muddy and the roads were mined. Using artillery spotter planes, 155-mm. howitzers shelled the Panther with high explosive and smoke, forcing the German tankers to close their hatches, thus reducing visibility. A platoon of tanks led by First Lieutenant Sell closed on the Panthers under cover of the smoke and Lieutenant Sell’s tank moved within 50 yards of the enemy and engaged them, knocking out two Panthers before his own tank was bogged down in the mud. His tank was then hit by fire from the Panthers, killing two and wounding two of the tank’s crew. First Lieutenant Sell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
