(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) Russell Francis Roache (ASN: 35104218), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 753d Tank Battalion (Medium) (Separate), SEVENTH U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces near Capalbo, Italy, on 12 June 1944. Serving as a company maintenance officer, First Lieutenant Roache moved forward in a vehicle to locate his company. Due to the rolling terrain he unknowingly by-passed the company and drove into enemy territory. Not realizing the danger, First Lieutenant Roache had his driver stop at a farmhouse, where they were confronted by 40 German soldiers assembled in a sharp ravine, preparing for dinner. German tanks were dispersed nearby. Armed only with a machine gun, First Lieutenant Roache leaped from his vehicle and the enemy surprised by his boldness, surrendered and were placed in the building under his guard, while the driver went for help. A German soldier, not a member of the group, approached unseen and fired a burst from a machine pistol at First Lieutenant Roache. Despite stomach, leg, and arm wounds, he shot his assailant, but the imprisoned Germans, taking advantage of the diversion, made a break for their tanks. Despite ebbing strength, First Lieutenant Roache killed nine of the enemy and, minutes later, was able to direct two American tank destroyers who knocked out three of the tanks and dispersed the remainder. First Lieutenant Roache’s determined fortitude in the face of overwhelming force cost the enemy extensive losses of equipment and men, and eliminated a probable enemy armored counterattack. First Lieutenant Roache’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
