The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Sidney Rapeport (ASN: 35012008), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 May 1943. At the culmination of a successful Allied drive in Northern Tunisia, a group of infantrymen charged one machine gun nest after another, with Private Rapeport, armed with a carbine, taking the lad in wiping out four of them. Then, his ammunition gone, he drove on, using the empty carbine as a club. Flinging himself on the crew of a fifth machine gun, he silenced it but was killed in action. His superb courage protected his own comrades and wreaked heavy casualties upon the enemy. Private First Class Rapeport’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
