Newman (ASN: 0-1307995), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 1st Battalion, 383d Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Conical Peak, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 23 May 1945. With a fellow officer, Captain Newman worked with automatic rifles, grenades, and satchel charged during a clean-up operation of Japanese pockets of resistance. When one enemy soldier opened fire with a rifle, Captain Newman quickly killed him with a well-placed grenade. They then routed the Japanese soldiers from their caves and mowed them down with automatic rifle fire. Another enemy soldier fired on them from a spider hole and was quickly killed with a grenade and a satchel charge, and when one soldier they thought was dead opened up on them, he was quickly killed with a burst of rifle fire. When all visible enemy had been disposed of, they blew up the enemy caves, which were suspected to contain enemy gun positions. In all they killed at least 15 enemy soldiers, sealed four caves, and obtained much valuable information. Captain Newman’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
