The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Kenneth Moore (ASN: 0-1303529), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, on 12 May 1943. While leading an assault on an enemy-held ridge, Lieutenant Moore was wounded in the foot. Despite the extreme difficulty of movement on the battlefield because of hostile rifle, machine gun and mortar fire, Second Lieutenant Moore continued to lead his men on a successful attack, and two hours later, was killed by machine gun fire in a dash to the front. Second Lieutenant Moore’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
