(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Guy Monroe Miller (ASN: 0-768629), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Heavy Bomber of the 429th Bombardment Squadron, 2d Bombardment Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in action against enemy forces in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations on 21 September 1944. While on a raid to Debrecen, Hungary, Second Lieutenant Miller’s bomber sustained a direct hit from flak and was severely damaged. Second Lieutenant Miller, assisted by his co-pilot controlled the bomber’s direction with the engines alone. The two men managed to return the aircraft to base and successfully land, however, the damage was so severe that upon landing the severed fuselage collapsed. Second Lieutenant Miller’s flying skills and unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
