Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 61 (September 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Frederick P. Lutz (ASN: 35669717), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France. On 21 July 1944, when his infantry company was pinned down by machine gun fire, Private Lutz, on his own initiative, crept across an open field until he was within 15 yards from the enemy gun, jumped up and charged. Struck by point-blank fire and mortally wounded, he still was able to destroy the gun, kill two crew members, and cause the others to flee. Private Lutz’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
