(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul Frederick Loes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of St. Remy, France, on 4 November 1944. When a well-concealed machinegun nest stopped his unit’s advance, Second Lieutenant Loes crawled across open terrain, charged the entrance of the gun emplacement, and single-handedly destroyed the enemy crew of four men. His action enabled his company to seize its objective. Second Lieutenant Loes’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
