(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Arnold Gustav Klawitter (ASN: 20707707), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Sbiba, Tunisia, on 20 February 1943. With his position under heavy enemy direct artillery fire and fire from four tanks that had penetrated the lines, First Sergeant Klawitter observed five wounded American soldiers lying out in the front of his foxhole. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he made five trips through this heavy enemy fire, carrying the wounded men back to a place of safety where first aid could be given them. First Sergeant Klawitter’s coolness under fire, devotion to duty and his desire to sacrifice himself, if necessary, for the safety of his comrades, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
