The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Private First Class Michael A. Lackner, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division. On 15 July 1969, during Operation PIPESTONE CANYON, Company F was executing a cordon maneuver southwest of DaNang when the lead element came under a heavy volume of fire from hostile soldiers occupying a well-fortified bunker complex. Reacting instantly, Private First Class Lackner, a member of the point squad, fearlessly delivered rapid fire at the enemy emplacement in a determined defense of his position. Observing that several companions had been wounded, Private First Class Lackner boldly leaped to his feet and rushed forward in an attempt to destroy the principle source of enemy fire with hand grenades. As he boldly ran across the fire-swept terrain, he was mortally wounded by hostile fire. His heroic and determined efforts inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. Private First Class Lackner’s courage, selfless concern for his fellowmen and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country. [The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.]
