The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Carl R. Kaczmarek (ASN: 7074206), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces. On 10 November 1942, at Oran, Algeria, Sergeant Kaczmarek received an extremely painful head wound while participating with his unit in an attack. He was evacuated to the regimental aid station, where his wound was treated. After receiving what treatment could be given, he insisted on rejoining his platoon where his presence contributed in large measure to the successful continuation of the advance. The tenacity and courage displayed by Sergeant Kaczmarek inspired his comrades to even greater efforts, resulting in the rapid attainment of their objective. By his display of personal bravery and indomitable fighting spirit, Sergeant Kaczmarek acted in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
