Daniel Murphy joined the Coast Guard as an enlisted man in 1945, and re-entered the Coast Guard Reserve in 1951, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was commissioned in 1958, and subsequently retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Rear Admiral in 1990.
