The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Myrthen Thomas Jones, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 11th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Mombinano, Italy, on 13 October 1944. Private jones, a member of the leading platoon in an attack, sighted a house where several of the enemy were firing small arms from the windows. Realizing the danger to the other men in his platoon, Private Jones, exposed to point-blank enemy fire, ran to the house and threw a hand grenade through he window, killing two and wounding three of the enemy. Immediately after the grenade exploded he rushed into the house and ordered the remaining Germans to surrender. By this time the remainder of his squad had reached the house and 12 Germans surrendered to Private Jones and his squad. After the platoon had reached its objective and had taken up defensive positions, the enemy launched a counterattack supported by intense artillery and small arms fire. When the enemy advanced to points within 50 yards of Private Jones’ position, he left his place of safety and charged the enemy, firing his M-1 rifle to wound several of the enemy and forced the others to retreat. By his determined coolness under fire, Private Jones inspired confidence in his fellow soldiers, and the defensive position was held. Private Jones’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
