John Scott Burhoe was commissioned through the Officer Candidate School in 1977. From 2007 to 2011 he served as the 29th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He is the first non-Academy graduate to lead the school in at least one hundred years. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 2011.
