In the final assault on an enemy fortified hill, while the squad of which he was a member was subjected to intense rifle, machine gun, and mortar fire, Private Hulsey charged into the heart of the enemy defense directing his fire against those in a machine gun nest and putting it out of action, before he was killed himself in that action. His action at the crucial point of the attack gained for his squad, fire supremacy over the enemy, and greatly inspired them I the assault which led to their occupation of the hill. Private First Class Hulsey’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
