The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Coxswain P. Heeding, United States Navy, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving in the U.S.S. ALDEBARAN (AF-10) during the rescue of survivors from the sinking LCT 1052 at Ulithi Atoll anchorage during the typhoon, on the night of 3 – 4 October 1944. In the face of heavy seas, a motor launch manned by a crew with Coxswain Heeding, persistently and diligently searched the area for survivors from the stricken vessel and succeeded in saving the lives of nine men. The duty performed by Coxswain Heeding was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
