The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Thomas Pierce Gibson (ASN: 34435673), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Istia, Italy, on 16 June 1944. On that date, Private First Class Gibson’s platoon became pinned down by enemy machine gun fire from a nearby building. Ignoring the fact that any moment brought instant, deadly fire from the enemy, Private First Class Gibson, on his own initiative, rushed across open ground and opened fire, forcing one machine gun to withdraw. Another machine gun opened fire on him, but he held his position and returned fire to enable his squad to advance and enter the building. After breaking up machine gun attacks and enemy counterattacks, the Germans, in desperation, then concentrated their mortar fire on his position, totally blinding him. The heroic performance of Private First Class Gibson resulted in saving the lives of his comrades, accounted for 16 dead Germans, and enabled his company to accomplish its mission. Private First Class Gibson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 91st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
