The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) John R. Garrabrant (ASN: 0-351519), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 10 June 1944. Captain Garrabrant volunteered to lead a patrol to seek out and destroy a hidden enemy strongpoint which was holding up an advance and inflicting heavy casualties upon our forces. With complete disregard for his own safety, he exposed himself to the direct fire f the enemy in an attack upon the position. Although subjected to intense enemy sniper fire, he continued to expose himself in order to locate the hidden enemy machinegun. Upon locating the enemy position, he personally led his men in a successful assault upon this enemy position. While leading the attack he lost his life. Captain Garrabrant’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
