Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 36 (July 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Albert L. Fisher, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. After being wounded in an infantry attack, Private First Class Fisher was returned to a rear area for medical care. Medical aid men were not immediately available in that area. While waiting, he saw two other men of his company lying wounded in the front-line area. Without though of his own wounds or safety, he crawled out over open terrain, brought these two wounded men through heavy enemy fire and back, one at a time, to safety positions. Before accepting aid for himself, he insisted that these two men, more seriously wounded, be treated first. Private First Class Fisher’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
