The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Buren L. Detour, United States Navy, for heroic conduct during World War II. Attracted by the distress calls of a soldier at Oneawa Beach, Territory of Hawaii, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Detour rushed into the surf and swam toward the soldier, who by that time had gone under. Diving repeatedly, he succeeded in bringing him to the surface and with the help of another person dragged the unconscious man through enormous breakers to the beach.
