Ayer, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct during four War Patrols in enemy controlled waters during World War II. By skillful and determined efforts to maintain the main motors of a United States Submarine, he contributed to the successful completion of four war patrols, resulting in the sinking of 61,677 tons of enemy shipping and the damaging of an additional 30,210 tons.
