Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 315 (June 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Thaddeus Thorpe, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while attached to a submarine detachment in action against the Japanese at Fort Mills, Corregidor, from 1 January to 10 April 1942. Ensign Thorpe risked his life on numerous occasions to carry out vital missions during the siege and the subsequent evacuation of personnel from that area. His efforts contributed immeasurably to the operations of the various units and to the defense of Corregidor. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
