The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Aubrey Glynn Edwards (ASN: 38089318), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces along the Saar River in Germany, on 11 December 1944. During an attack on the town of Dillengen, Germany, Staff Sergeant Edwards’ company was located along a railroad embankment. Late in the afternoon an enemy force of 50 Germans equipped with flame throwers and demotions material was seen approaching the platoon’s pillbox. The Germans immediately concentrated heavy automatic fore on the pillbox doorway in an effort to contain the Americans. Staff Sergeant Edwards took in the situation at a glance, realized that his platoon was hopelessly trapped unless the enemy was stopped. He dashed through the door, braved the enemy’s heavy fire and, armed only withy his M-1 rifle, reached a commanding firing position on high ground where he blasted away, firing from his shoulder until he had killed seven of the enemy and wounded three others. His actions silenced the enemy’s automatic fire long enough for his comrades to escape from the pillbox, whereupon the remaining 33 Germans surrendered, enabling Staff Sergeant Edwards’ platoon to also take over the pillbox which the attacking Germans had previously occupied. Staff Sergeant Edwards’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
