    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Coxswain Arthur H. Burkhard, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism as a crew member of a Coast Guard Cutter during rescue operations on the French coast in June 1944. Coxswain Burkhard, when PC 1261 was hit by enemy shellfire and many of her crew thrown into the water, volunteered to go over the side and try to rescue survivors in the water. Through his gallant action the loss of life was kept at a minimum.
