The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Marcelino M. Robles, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron TWO, Naval Station, Rota, Spain, on 30 August 1982. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Robles demonstrated outstanding bravery and was daring in his efforts to prevent a man and his son from drowning in a well filled with toxic gasoline and methane fumes. After three courageous attempts and nearly complete asphyxiation by the poisonous gasses, he was finally pulled from the well. Though unsuccessful in his endeavor, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Robles’ spontaneity and willingness to render assistance without concern for the risk to his own life reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
