The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Harry Holland Dunbar (ASN: 39910461), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Anzio, Italy, on 4 May 1944. A combat patrol under Staff Sergeant Dunbar’s command moved out under cover of darkness to investigate enemy activity and to capture prisoners. After advancing a short distance the patrol was detected and fired on by a German machinegun. Sergeant Dunbar set up his patrol as a base of fire and, alone, moved to a position in the rear of the enemy emplacement, assaulted it and forced the gun crew to surrender. He then led his patrol forward and having completed his mission, returned to friendly lines with his prisoners. The courage and resourcefulness of Sergeant Dunbar exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
