The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Earl F. Donnelly (ASN: 37363439), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 756th Tank Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Algolsheim, France, on 6 February 1945. Firing his co-axial machinegun from an exposed position, Private Donnelly was able to hold the enemy at bay. When his machinegun jammed, he seized a submachine gun and stood in the turret, disregarding bazooka, machinegun, machine pistol and rifle fire which crippled his tank and shot off his earphones. Fighting for 45 minutes, he killed three, captured two and wounded at leas 10 of the enemy at point-blank range, thereby shattering the counterattack and saving his tank from destruction. Private Donnelly’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
