    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Don C. Bowman, Jr. (NSN: 0-97788), United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during a war patrol in enemy controlled waters during World War II. During a submarine patrol in enemy waters, Lieutenant Bowman’s excellent judgment and ability in the solution of fire-control problems rendered inestimable assistance to his commanding Officer in sinking an important amount of enemy shipping.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Don C. Bowman, Jr. (NSN: 0-97788), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Diving Officer in the U.S.S. GUARDFISH (SS-217), during the EIGHTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 14 June 1944 to 31 July 1944. His careful and precise control of depth during attacks upon enemy shipping contributed directly to the success of his vessel in sinking eight enemy ships totaling 58,000 tons and damaging one additional vessel of 4,000 tons. His efficiency and coolness during periods of severe enemy countermeasures greatly assisted his ship in conducting successful evasive tactics. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
