The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Commander Edmund William Biros (NSN: 0-77706), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in aerial flight against enemy forces on 4 July 1944. As flight leader of a pre-dawn fighter sweep over a strongly defended enemy air base in the Volcano Islands, he seized control of the air and, using the aircraft under his command with great skill, established a combat air patrol over the objective which was so effective that enemy aircraft was not able to carry out a single effective attack on our dive bombers and torpedo planes which followed the fighter sweep to attach the enemy air base. During the action he shot down one enemy fighter and the planes under his command shot down 14 additional fighters and damaged five, while numerous enemy aircraft were destroyed on the ground. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
