The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Edward H. O. Bielefeldt, United States Naval Reserve, for heroism, gallantry, and outstanding endurance when the U.S.S. CHESTATEE struck a mine off the northern coast of Borneo on 27 July 1945. Without fear for his own life, he entered a smoke-filled compartment which was aflame with burning oil from ruptured diesel oil tanks. With untiring effort and skill, he administered first aid to the injured, and performed his duties in a manner which was an inspiration to all hands. His leadership and courage were outstanding and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
