The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Joseph C. Bates (NSN: 0-137746), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Torpedo Data Computer Operator in the U.S.S. SEALION (SS-315), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters from 31 October 1944 to 3 December 1944. His keen understanding of fire control equipment and proficiency in operating the computer were off valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks which resulted in sinking enemy shipping totaling more than 28,000 tons and damaging over 25,000 tons. His calm manner and devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
