The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Peter F. Annable (NSN: 0-254488), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity on 21 February 1945, as a Hanger Deck Officer of the U.S.S. SARATOGA (CV-60), during the assault and capture of Iwo Jima Island. After the ship was seriously damaged by enemy action and raging fires ensued, he, although painfully wounded, successfully turned on two sprinkling and water control curtains before being forced away by an explosion. Courageously, he then made his way to the hangar deck where he supervised the fire fighters and the evacuation of the wounded. His heroic action performed in the face of great personal danger, proved to be an inspiration to all. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
