The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Norman Lee Cooley (ASN: 34331921), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the European Theater of Operations, on 6 October 1944. Private Cooley, a machine gunner, displayed exceptional gallantry by remaining at his post when all six riflemen who were assisting him had either been killed or wounded as a strong enemy force tried to overrun his position. He inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy when they delivered a strong counterattack. Exercising indomitable courage and determination, he destroyed an enemy tank which seriously threatened his position. Private First Class Cooley’s devastating machine gun fire continued until darkness when the enemy became so disorganized that they withdrew. Private First Class Cooley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 79th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
