The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Commander Doyle Wilmer Lynn, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight for a coordinated attack on a group of PT boats in the vicinity of Quang Khe, North Vietnam, on 28 April 1965. As leader of a flight of five F-8D Crusaders, Commander Lynn used air-to-ground rockets to suppress the PT boats’ heavy anti-aircraft fire, thus allowing the attack bombers successfully and safely to make their low-altitude attacks which caused extensive damage to the boats.
