The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Airman George N. Bloomer (NSN: 47609362), United States Navy, for heroism in the performance of his duties while serving with Helicopter Utility Squadron TWO (HU-2), on board the U.S.S. ESSEX (CVA-9), at sea on 15 June 1959. As Helicopter Crewman in a HUP-2, Airman Bloomer willingly risked his life to rescue a critically injured pilot, who had ditched his F-4D jet fighter, by jumping 20 feet from a hovering helicopter into the floating debris of the crashed aircraft. He faced grave danger of being entangled by the sinking plane to swim to the unconscious pilot. Turbulent waters presented an additional obstacle as the crewman struggled in securing the heavy, limp pilot and himself to the rescue seat. The helicopter pilot on raising the rescue was obliged, due to the slipping cable, to lower the helicopter until the wheels were in the water and hovering dangerously close to the crewman’s head. But disregarding all dangers Airman Bloomer managed to get the pilot safely into the helicopter. His heroic achievement and quick action most assuredly saved the pilot from certain death. His application of professional skill and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
