The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class John Maxwell Allan, United States Navy, for heroism while saving the life of a drowning comrade at Einwetok Atoll. While disembarking from a landing vehicle, a fully outfitted member of the landing party lost his balance and plunged into the sea. The weight of his gear and a dangerous undertow forced the man under. Without regard for his own safety, Seaman First Class Allan leaped to the aid of the drowning man, and with the aid of a companion, succeeded in towing him to safety. His courage was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
