The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Thomas Andrew Ahroon (NSN: 0-62000), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in the Western Pacific from July through October 1944, as Air Officer aboard the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16). His able direction of the air department and the air group has contributed materially to these successful operations against the enemy. On 24 October 1944, while the ship was undergoing continuous attack throughout the day by enemy aircraft, planes were launched, landed, and re-armed under his personal direction in such a successful manner that maximum damage was inflicted upon the enemy. His coolness and bravery while under enemy attack was an inspiration to the officers and men under him and his leadership and technical skill has been outstanding. His performance of duty has at all times been distinguished and outstanding and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
