The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Charles S. White (ASN: 6849030), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed during the flood disaster at Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, 18 March 1936. Private White secured a boat, repeatedly crossed a raging channel under hazardous conditions and succeeded in rescuing several persons who were isolated and in danger from the flood waters. While performing this duty, he discovered that an oil stove in one of the houses had exploded. With utter disregard of his own safety, he immediately extinguished the flames and brought the occupants of the house to a place of safety.
