The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant James B. Tyler, United States Army (Retired), for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy displayed in assisting in rescuing a boy from drowning in the vicinity of the quartermaster dock at Fort Monroe, Virginia, on 18 June 1937. While fishing from one of the marine railway catwalks, a boy lost his balance, fell into the deep water, and was in grave danger of drowning in the ebbing tide. Hearing cries for help, Sergeant Tyler, fully clothed, waded into the water for a distance, then swam to the rescue of the boy, and succeeded in keeping him afloat until help arrived to bring them safely to shore.
