The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant Goodman K. Larson, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Coast Artillery Reserve, assigned to Battery B, 61st Coast Artillery (AA), in rescuing an enlisted man from drowning in the Sabine River near Toledo, Texas, on 8 May 1940. When an enlisted man who could not swim, carried beyond his depth by the swift current of the river, called for help, Lieutenant Larson, with compete disregard of his personal safety, unhesitatingly dived into the stream and went to his assistance. Reaching the exhausted man as he was being carried rapidly down stream by the current, Lieutenant Larson, towed him more than 30 feet to the river bank, thereby saving his life. The heroism displayed by Lieutenant Larson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
