The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Alvin E. Hinrichesen (ASN: 6816232), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy displayed at East Station, Tientsin, China, 29 July 1937. In conjunction with the movement of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry, from Camp Burrowes, Chinwangtao, China, to American Barracks, Tientsin, China, a freight car carrying machine guns, ammunition, and other valuable United State Government property arrived in the railroad freight yard at East Station, Tientsin, China, at the time Chinese and Japanese troops were engaged in battle for possession of that station. Private Hinrichesen was a member of a guard posted in the freight car and for fourteen hours remained at his post of duty assisting in the protection of the Government property in his charge. During this time, all outside communication was cut off and the freight car was repeatedly struck by fragments from exploding shells. By his heroic conduct in the face of danger, Private Hinrichesen rendered important aid in saving valuable Government property.
